Saturnia – Cascate del Mulino
A sud di Grosseto nei pressi del borgo di Saturnia sono collocate le omonime terme libere che si trovano in basso ai piedi di due tipiche colline che tanto caratterizzano il paesaggio della Maremma. Appena a ridosso del luogo si trova un ampio parcheggio sterrato e non coperto dove parcheggiare e dove ho incontrato parecchi stranieri organizzati anche con bus per venire a godere dell’acqua termale libera. Ad una estremità del parcheggio è presente il corso di acqua che rifornisce le cascate, non ci avevo fatto caso inizialmente ma esplorando la zona ho visto che si tratta di un canale che attraversa i campi e arriva fino ad un fianco del famoso mulino dove il flusso di acqua intenso trovando un dislivello si apre e rifornisce tutte le vasche. Alcuni bagnanti si immergono direttamente nel canale a monte in modo da trovare prima di tutti gli altri le acque mosse da una intensa corrente. Dall’altro fianco del mulino si può invece scendere a livello del fiume sottostante dove le acque calde si riversano e qui la visuale della scenografia della natura è grandiosa. In pratica alla base della collina che si staglia davanti passa un fiume formando una curva proprio di fronte al mulino ed in questo punto si vanno ad inserire le acque termali. Il mulino si trova leggermente più in alto ed il dislivello fino al letto del fiume è formato da vasche calcaree formatesi nei secoli dalle quali entra ed esce l’acqua per andare nelle vasche del livello sottostante. Alla base del mulino sono state create delle barriere con i sassi del fiume per trattenere le acque termali in modo da alzare il livello delle acque dove immergersi e stare distesi a godersi il sole e gli effetti benefici termali. Ho trovato molti turisti, il sito è molto noto. Alcuni di essi risalivano per un pezzo il fiume, le cui acque si percepiscono più fredde al contatto, per andare in una zona con meno corrente dove prelevare i fanghi con cui cospargersi viso e corpo. Per fortuna tuttavia l’area è servita da un bar dove è possibile mangiare e fare la doccia per ripulirsi.
Saturnia – Cascate del Mulino (Mill waterfalls)
South of Grosseto near the village of Saturnia are the free spas of the same name that are located at the foot of two hills that are so typical of the Maremma landscape. Just behind the spas there is a large unpaved and uncovered parking lot where you can leave your car and where I met several foreigners who had got themselves organized by bus to come and enjoy the free thermal springs. At one end of the parking lot there is the water course that supplies the falls. I hadn’t noticed it at first but while exploring the area I saw that there is a channel that runs down across the fields and reaches a side of the famous mill where the flow of intense water, finding a drop in the rocks, opens out and fills all the pools. Some bathers plunge directly into the upstream channel in order to find the waters moved by an intense current before all the other visitors in the basins below. On the other side of the mill, instead, you can go down to the level of the river below where the hot waters spill and here the view of the local scenery of nature is marvellous. In practice, at the foot of the hill facing the mill there passes a river forming a curve just in front of the mill and it’s at this point where the thermal waters enter. The mill is located slightly higher up and the drop to the river bed is made up of limestone natural pools carved out over the centuries and from which the water flows in and out to spill into the pools of the level below. At the base of the mill some barriers have been created with river stones to retain the thermal waters in order to raise the water level. Here where you can bathe and relax to enjoy the sun and the beneficial thermal massage.
I came across plenty of tourists. The site is very well known. Some of them went upriver for a while, where the waters are perceived colder to the touch, to reach an area with less current, where they can collect the mud to sprinkle on their face and body. Fortunately, the area is served by a bar where you can eat and take a shower to clean up.
